Well, in reality, the civil war was so about slavery.
But while we’re remembering that, and remembering what a relief it was to have the civil war over, let’s remember also that Grant personally forbade the firing of salutes in celebration. It wasn’t that kind of day, to his thinking, or to Lincoln’s. Nor should it be for us.
That humane approach seems to have had mixed results. Next time we might give Thaddeus Stevens theories a try.
