I believe the Pac Northwest is the birthplace of hte militia movement. Eastern Washington state and Idaho right? I remember seeing crime documentaries on groups like The Order and stuff.

That’s the source of a good deal of it. Oregon has always had a share of the really nasty hard right - genuine Nazis, Phineas priests that kind of scum. Neiwert’s books mostly deal with the Pacific Northwest, as I recall. He has a blog:
