This is totally the reason.
Back in the ’90s and ’00s, there was a lot of street crime (muggings, assaults, etc.) in Washington, D.C. The local media couldn’t be bothered to report on it.
But then a couple local reporters got mugged and it’s was a story for weeks about the ‘raging street crime epidemic’ and how traumatizing it was to be a victim, etc., etc.
Kind of like the R’s in Congress suddenly cared about gun violence after they got shot at.
