re: #95 Higgs Boson’s Mate

You might be interested in reading Mary Boykin Chesnut’s A Diary from Dixie. She was married to James Chesnut, Jr., United States Senator from South Carolina 1859-1861. Mr’s Chesnut was a native of South Carolina. The book is based on the diaries she kept through the war years. She is not an apologist for the South and her book provided me with some insights regarding Southern culture, attitudes and politics at the time.

Every time conversation turns to the South I can’t help but think of a scene in Gone With The Wind.

Near the beginning, just as the war is starting up, Rhett Butler remarks that “There isn’t a single cannon factory in the whole of the South.”

One of the ‘young gentlemen’ in the room asks heatedly, “Are you questioning the honour of The South?”

That’s how the South, or at least the people claiming identity from it, appear to me. Someone makes a statement of fact and they get pissed off about it.

Apologies for generalizing but that scene has alway resonated for me.
