The only way that party changes is with tough love and hammers. It needs to be torn down and rebuilt. The rats in it can start something else so everyone decent can ignore them. Start the Tea Party or Freedom Party or whatever and go fuck yourselves.

If all the reasonable people leave, then there’s no chance for the party to be rebuilt. A new party would have to be built in its place. And, historically, that’s what has happened in our history. The Whigs started losing members and weren’t suddenly rebuilt, a new party (the Republicans) eventually rose and replaced them.

It would be interesting to see if a new part could rise. The Reform Party tried that in the late 90s, and it failed - in part because they didn’t have a guiding ideology beyond “I’m Ross Perot” and eventually fell victim to the likes of Trump, Buchanan, and Duke.

It would probably take a decade, at the very least, to replace one of the two major parties, in the best circumstances. That would require, in addition to the whole ideology/governing philosophy bit, building a ground game at the state and local level in addition to trying to run at the national level.
