I reference to All in the Family Carroll O’Conner was interviewed a little while back and he said that he thought Archie was too bigoted and that no one would like him.

What made the Archie Bunker character work was not only Carroll O’Conner’s superb portrayal, but that as the series progressed, we saw that Archie’s bigotry stemmed more from ignorance than outright malice. His character was capable of personal growth and change, albeit rather slow - and sometimes reluctant - change.
