Further to the north, grilling is seen as a “manly” activity, and if you don’t have a barbecue and the skill to use it, you’re seen as somewhat of a disappointment. Funny how these things are regional, or perhaps more generational; I would imagine that my father’s father probably felt the way your feral Tennesseean did.
Dad did a great turkey outside, and cooked Sunday brunch. Mom cooked for 7 kids. Learning how to cook for 1 or 2 people took a long time. Then I totally lost the ability to cook when I got my head injury.
