The Democrats and Republicans have proved to be remarkably adept a neutralizing populist movements over the last century and a half, so I’m not holding my breath, but American politics is more polarized now than at any time since the Civil War, so who knows.

That is the first proven theorem of a winner take all system. There will be two major parties, and they will coopt any message similar to their own. The last time we had a major party go away, it split into two groups: a new party, and those that went to the other party. And, as polarized as we are now, there is no party that is going to split.
