Americans still write literally tons of checks. They are all physically loaded onto planes and flown to a central clearinghouse in Kansas. With flights grounded for several days, the entire clearing system nearly collapsed.

Paper checks are extraordinarily uncommon here; I’ve only seen one in all my 15 years here. Most people pay cash, debit card, or postal wire transfer. COD is also still an option here - that’s how I paid for my glasses last time I ordered them online.
