Really. I mean, $17,000+ just for added premiums for pregnancy? I mentioned here once before that my mom still the hospital bill for my world debut. It comes to something like $127, and that included ten nights in the hospital, since in those days a long rest was considered best for new mothers. The anesthesiologist charged $3.50. That’s correct: three dollars and fifty cents. Two weeks of my dad’s pay as a sergeant in the Army Air Corps, far from a princely sum, could cover it all.
True, this was in the days shortly after doctors stopped using leeches, but still it seems a long and not altogether wonderful way for our nation to have come.
I was born at the Army Base Hospital at Fort Campbell in 1952 and the entire hospital bill was $6 and change.
Granted, it was a military hospital but still…
