(I find it strange that the UK uses centigrade for temperatures and miles for distances and wind speeds.)

Generally, like most other sensible countries the UK uses metric units and Centigrade/Kelvin. The one big exception is miles for distance measurement. We use SI metres for things like construction, manufacturing etc. with some odd results, like the standard 4 foot by 8 foot panel of sheet wood or plasterboard being listed by suppliers as 1220mm x 2240mm. Saying that, go into a store and ask for a dozen four by eights of 12mm weatherboard and the guy at the shop counter will know what you’re wanting.

Road speed limits are set in British law in miles per hour (30, 60 or 70 depending) hence wind speeds are often reported in mph too. There’s a switch on the BBC’s weather website that allows a change to report wind speeds as kph if required (divide by 3.6 for SI metres per second).
