Tomorrow is the big day for Curiosity. The BBC put up a documentary last week looking at the details of the landing problems - they are good for that, still.

Curiosity and the two previous rovers are the kind of projects NASA should be focusing on. The whole Orion project and the idea of sending people to Mars is kind of insane, means they’ll be slow roasted by radiation for months on end and offers little in the way of discovery that the automated missions aren’t’ already doing.

If we want to think about the next step for manned exploration then realistically it’s going to take a decade or two of prep work. The ideal next step would be to launch bots to the moon designed to dig in deep and create a base designed for long term habitation.
