And yes, Independence Day should be about everything but the military. It’s about an idea set forth in the Declaration of Independence which we still fall short of achieving but continue to strive for, that all persons are created equal and government exists by the consent of the governed.

In no place in that document is a military mentioned at all.

And then we crap on the descendants of those who were left out of the vision set forth in the Declaration when they point that out i.e. Kaepernick, white especially red white America has no clue why an African American isn’t going to have romantic notions about our founding. Frankly the more I learn about Jefferson the more I really think he was a Rights for me but not thee type. And it’s a shame because he had some great ideas but the contradictions are our history too.
