I am not a microbiologist, but I am pretty sure aromatase is an enzyme not a gene. Maybe they found a gene responsible for the production of aromatase? Seems like sloppy science writing.

Yes, aromatase is an enzyme (see Wikipedia).

Reading up on that enzyme says it is indeed implicated in gynecomastia in men.

It is encoded by genes on chromosome 15.
