That Onion video (which I just watched) is actually extremely funny — but, tragically, it is no different from reality, since the network pundits do nothing but pander exactly as depicted in the skit. The only difference being, they don’t need real-time feedback — they already know ahead of time which buzzphrases will resonate with which audience.
