Okay, I think you’re illustrating the problem here that a lot of PoC have explained. Blackface and the KKK are and weren’t funny then either. They were never funny. The former a symbol of dehumanizing mockery and the latter, a domestic terrorist group that made life a living hell for thousands of African-Americans for generations to the point where many African-American families left the South for the North. A medical student, one going into the Army no less after his graduation should have known better than to pose as a KKK member or in blackface. I’m definitely aware of how social media has changed how much of our lives are open for the world to see but I can tell you this much having parents around Northam’s age, I would be genuinely horrified if I had learned one of them appeared in KKK garb or blackface in 1984, three years before my birth and one year after their marriage. That doesn’t mean I think Northam is a bad person but this really is a bad look.

Not meaning to pick on you but you might want to have a word with Mel Brooks about what was funny 35 years ago.
