There’s no lanes. The horses start side byy side in the starting gate, and once the gun goes off, they all try to hug the rail in the turns. Interfering with another horse (like body blocking in basketball) is a no-no, though.

Was this year another of the overcrowded starts, where they have to rig portable gates?

(Family used to go to Derby Day, celebrated it real-time while stationed in Korea, now I didn’t know the name of a single entry.)
