sadly for me, i’m learning portuguese, but it’s the brazilian variant, which means I don’t have any good place to flee. I’ve wanted to learn the language so I could go to Lisbon, but sadly nobody likes to offer a full-throated language-learning program for continental portuguese. It’s always Brazilian. The continental programs are always like 30 lessons, which kind of sucks.

Are the two variants of Portuguese that different that you would have difficulty communicating?

Not that I know jack about the language, but I thought it was more an issue of “accent” (and the inevitable colloquialisms) - rather like, say, American vs. British vs. Australian English.
