Greets and saluts from a crisp and clear NYC metro area. Fall is definitely in the air around here, which is a welcome change from the Indian summers we’ve been having lately. If you thought it was warm this summer, you’d be right. 26 straight years of above average summer temps in the northern hemisphere.

Oh, and the NYT asks whether we’d be willing to let 750,000 Somalis starve. The short answer? Yes.

The slightly longer answer: Yes, we had no problem allowing genocides where hundreds of thousands were killed in Rwanda, Congo, Sudan, etc. or civil wars that resulted in 2 million dead in Sudan, etc.

What’s another 750k? A statistic.

Oh, there will be some relief efforts, but the body count will rise and the underlying reasons for the ongoing crises in the Horn of Africa will go unresolved - namely that you’ve got a failed state and no central authority willing or able to govern and terror groups and pirates are exploiting the situation to their own ends.
