I think this comment Alan Greg Newkirk left over there was much better, if you want my opinion. It was at least one of the best comments there.

The loss of any piece of history is a tragedy, even if its a part of a shameful chapter of our past. Plantations like these are modern-day reminders of slavery, a silent testimony to one of the worst parts of American history and without it we lose a part of that reminder. Its easy to dismiss something when you have never encountered it, but when confronted with a relic from that era, it serves as a pointed reminder of what happened.

So even though it was a plantation house that was built from the sweat of slaves, it still is important as a reminder of the evils of slavery. It’s loss is an important one that should not be dismissed as a “oh, but it had to do with slavery, so it being gone is a good thing, right?”. It’s not a good thing. Reminders like this from our past, learning from these events, the understanding that comes from it is what will prevent these events from repeating.
