Apparently Giphy has now disabled their “Play On Hover” option which I was using, because they want to inflict animations on people whether they like it or not.

Given what happened to Kurt Eichenwald, that should be illegal. I’m dead serious (though of course the chance of such a law ever passing in GOPertrump’s America is less than zero). Autoplay video of any kind makes me want to smash things. It ranges from horribly annoying data-plan drain to literally life-threatening for people with seizure disorders.

Perhaps a stopgap measure (especially if Giphy is determined to be douchey) is to offer some kind of reverse “Click to reveal” function - a button we can click to hide embedded content in a post, regardless of whether it was put in hide tags in the first place.
