All that water has to go somewhere.

Somewhere is downstream.

Ohio River flows in to the Mississippi, which has been above flood stage for much of the year. The Big Muddy has been above high water level in Louisiana for 225+ days in a row (and counting).

In other words, the higher the water level, the faster it goes, and the more concern placed on flood control systems not designed to handle these kinds of events for the duration experienced.

Exactly. That is going to slow down the ability of the Illinois River (which is where I live, and it’s a lot closer now than it usually is!) to drain, and it is VERY high, just off record levels at this point.
