Back in 1999 while visiting a friend who was attending university in Germany we did a weekend trip up to Berlin. On the drive back to Stuttgart, we stopped at Weimar and visited Buchenwald. My first impression was that the camp reminded me of a summer camp. It was surronded by woods and seemed like a peaceful place at first. Then one notices the guard towers at the corners and that the perimeter fence was electricfied. After seeing the ovens and the guard quarters that now house the exhibits. I left feeling chilled. You don’t think industrial killing can be happen and then you see a place like this and realize that yes, it can and did happen.
