I just called Shimano to see if they are still honoring the recall of a crank they made in 1995. They are. I have one on a bike that came in for a revival restoration this morning. They send a kit of all the parts needed to be compatible with the new crank, then I send them the old crank, and they’ll send me a check to cover labor.

What I didn’t get into with the very helpful person at Shimano is the fact that last time I was on my way to the post office with one of these recalled cranks, I was hit by a car. Some nice person picked up that box and it finished its trip to Shimano. The check was waiting for me six months later when I reopened the shop.

I’m one of the few bike mechanics who can ID the three models of crank involved in the recall in under a minute.
