Right, that’s what I was thinking of. Places where not only is nearly everyone white but their families have all been there generations.

That’s where we grew up, her in the toe of New York and me in South Central PA, the part that’s like Alabama.

Each of our families were outsiders, the only family not related to everyone else. Where she was, everyone’s family was Dutch, and their names all ended in -ink. Where I grew up, everybody’d family was German, and their names all ended in -baugh.

We like to say we grew up in the same small town, 300 miles apart.
