The mountains of California (save for the volcanos) are due to uplift followed by bits of the earth’s crust tipping over (which is why one side of a range is steeper than the opposite side.) This makes for all these medium sized mountains out here, and the many small to medium earthquakes.

Yes it is. But my ex-wife, from the very, very geologically stable Czech Republic, wondered how on earth anyone could live in Southern California after she experienced her first earthquake back in December 2003. It was just a mild little shaker (we were up in Palmdale, CA at the time and the earthquake epicenter was San Simeon) but it shook her up. She got pretty nervous after that.
