The narrative that conservatism is a kinder gentler repression for our own good and liberalism is libertinism (the exact opposite of conservatism) is precisely the shallow moral dreck proselytized by morons such as Shapiro, Fischer, take your pick.

It’s a concept rooted in biblical morality ingrained in an ideology.

It’s not ‘repression’, its the point that people are best when they live by a proper moral code, and without that code it is far too easy to fall prey to temptation. To resist a temptation, people must be taught why it is dangerous and wrong.

But I don’t see that as the most salient point in the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Rather, Hoffman was in a good bit of psychological distress and did not deal with it properly. His use of heroin was a failure in his duty to his children, but it was less a fundamental moral failing and more that he was trying to self-medicate.
