Actually I would point the beginning of America’s decline at October 1973 the first OPEC embargo. Statistics show that point was the beginning of the decline of the middle class.

From a purely economic point of view, yes, the oil embargo is something we had a chance to recover from but refused to do.

But 2001 saw us the victors of the Cold War and undisputed leader of the Free World, Russia was a wreck and China was only just starting to flex its economic muscle.
