Someone explained why they have to stick with pints (0.56 liter):

The great British piss artist tradition was always to hit the pub at 5pm and drink seven pints: one per hour, and then one just before 11 pm closing time.

If they switched that to seven half-liters, that would leave you nearly a pint short (0.42 liters) at the end of the evening and that would be just wrong
