Why is this a thing?

Several generations of culture reinforcing the idea that morality is individualistic and thus has no social conscience. Everything going on is a denial that society has an agreed-upon standard of mutual aid. They’re not stupid, they’re furious at the idea that caring about other people is a virtue because they prefer their own interpretation: that the virus is yet another test and survival is a sign of superiority.

You cannot make me care lies behind everything they say and do…but most of these people are smart enough to not say something that antisocial outright, so they have to create a series of baffles and crenelations involving “personal responsibility” and “distrust of ‘elites’” to cover their core assumptions that they’re a better kind of person who will survive and should not be concerned with the death of others who, by virtue of their death, are less important.
