Yep, that is not a fun job dragging a pile of meat out of the forest. That’s one reason I’ve helped fellow hunters in our group dress out kills and/or drag them out.

Longest distance I’ve had to drag one is about 1/2 a mile. And that included getting it across a creek over a narrow (3’ wide) bridge with no side rails. Mostly downhill though in that case.

Shortest was about 50 yards out of a gully to a point that we were driving pickup trucks to park.

Heard stories from my friend about his father taking five or more hours to get a deer out of the swampy terrain he preferred to hunt in solo in that area.

We hunted in an area that was remediated strip mine in south central PA in the rough area of Tyrone, PA. Lots of up and down due to the spill piles, some open meadows that eventually filled in with pine and locust. Plus a swamp in one area that a creek flowed out of. The last was a favorite hangout for the deer of course. A bunch of the area was later made state game land and banned to vehicles. (Though the locals still take four wheelers around the blockages on the old access roads.)
