re: #116 Killgore Trout

I think we will probably differ on the conditions which created OWS. As the economy improves the economic purpose of OWS will become less important. They pretty much abandoned their economic cause anyways. What I think is driving the momentum is that OWS is willing to partner with pretty much anyone else on the “left”. Unions, Immigration activists, anti-war, anti-globalization groups, anarchists, etc. That’s why I think May Day was a good choice for relaunch. It’s a generic expression of leftiness with lots of groups participating. The NATO summit will attract lots of anti-globalization moonbats so that will be a good opportunity too.
I think the increasing violent nature of Occupy and tacit support for the resulting terrorism will prevent OWS from becoming widely popular but the left doesn’t seem bothered and will continue to support it.

Well, it’s not true that people on the left are not bothered by it. I’m certainly bothered by parts of it. But I think what gets it some level of support by “the left”, myself included, is the fact that it has really been decades since anything resembling a left wing moment has actually existing inside the U.S. In many ways, OWS is something that the desire for such an organized moment can, rightly or wrongly, be projected upon. We’re a bit tired of simply being punching bags for the various radical right wing moments.
