On another level entirely but eerily similar, the ski towns in Colorado have the same dilemma with development. I’ve noticed that the towns that were there before the ski areas showed up tend to have a more authentic feel and ambiance. The towns that were established around the ski areas are fucking Club Med. The more history around the town, the more cool it is.
A list:
Ski towns in Colorado that predated the ski areas:
1. Steamboat Springs
2. Telluride
3. Crested Butte
4. BreckenridgeSki towns in Colorado built around the ski areas:
1. Vail
2. Copper Mountain
3. Winter Park
4. Keystone
So where should a person more happy on snow shoes and a cheap Miller beer & shot of whisky go hang out? I’d not mind giving skiing a chance past the night that nearly destroyed my knee but I’d be damned if I know where to try it.
