One of the things that’s stuck with me after reading it was antisemitism as part of the 1914 Russian advance. The soldiers starting stealing, looting, and raping in shtetls on the way to the front, and its was just considered not an issue by the command structure.

Politics can change drastically, but it can’t instantly wipe away deeper cultural trends.
