He may have gotten a death benefit from SSDI when his mother passed as well. Many time children of SSDI recipients also get a payment, and once the children become adults, they sometimes can be considered qualified for being disabled under the law.

But so far everything is speculation. We’re still back to the issue of no one who would be in a position to know has claimed he was mentally ill. The NYT is just pushing the narrative that “mentally ill people are dangerous.”

As for adult children of SSDI recipients (and there is also no evidence his parents received those either), adult children are still required to qualify the same as everyone else.

As Social Security itself notes, the only way those payments can continue is if the child enters college, or the child is himself or herself disabled.
