re: #113 Mattand

I had a conversation with my sister last week about current events and when the child concentration camps came up, she was definitely Team “AOC is Out-of-Line Calling Them for What They Really Are.” The whole “Sure, locking up brown kids based on their race is wrong and all, but you can’t say that because no one’s being gassed to death. Civility!!!”

She’s the same way with my racist cousins: I’m the one who gets screamed at when I point out their bigotry because I’m supposed to be the bigger person and pretend it’s not happening.

I utterly agree with everything you said. I’m willing to bet, though, either the author or the editor(s) or both of that article are pulling their punches when they do shit like this, just like my friends and family do. They are literally scared of Trump and the MAGAts accusing them of partisanship, so they’re dancing around the truth.

Which is fucking nuts. The man is openly cultivating white supremacy as a voting block for Republicans, but it’s somehow wrong to point that out.

It’s a fucking untenable standard that elevates civility over everything. You know, except for the fact that it privileges racist bullshit as inherently civil long even when folks go on rants about it. And it seems to be sadly prevalent through our entire fucking society. It’s somehow always fucking worse to call someone a racist than to be a fucking racist.

This is why i don’t inherently disbelieve that there’s a danger to calling out Trump’s racist bullshit, but that’s because I just honestly believe we’re broken as a society at this point that there would be more people who would run screaming toward Trump when he’s called out than there would be convinced to leave him.
