Army Corps Of Engineers Won’t Work With DNR On Iron Ore Mine Impact Study

In what may be a major setback for both the state and Gogebic Taconite (GTAC), the Army Corp of Engineers says that it will not work with the Department of Natural Resources on a major part of the permit process for an open pit iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin.

A letter from the Corps to DNR Deputy Secretary Matt Moroney says differences in state and federal environmental requirements won’t allow the two governments to work together on an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The EIS is one of the most important parts of getting a permit to mine.
