You could have get the money from a mysterious source. One day she just gets a briefcase full of money and takes off on the adventure, maybe you payoff who gave her the money, maybe it stays a mystery. Don’t let ‘realism’ get in the way of a good story.

Good suggestion. Too much nuts and bolts can bog down the book. Your protagonist could inherit a nice sum from a heretofore unknown relative. Finding out who that person was and why they left her the money could open the door to your other developments.
