re: #122 Anymouse 🌹

What D’Felon was trying to do was segregate “settlers” (defined as the first people who colonised the nation and took the land from those already here) from “immigrants” (as people who came later, with the unspoken assertion of “they didn’t deserve to be here because they didn’t work to establish the country”)

He’s trying to suggest that it was the “settlers” who built America and everybody who has come since are “immigrants” who did nothing to contribute to America’s greatness. I hate to break it to him, but pretty much all the colonies from Jamestown onward relied strongly upon shiploads of new people showing up before they became self-reliant.

And guess what, “chain migration” was a large part of what made America successful. Men would go ahead to help establish new colonies or make a place for themselves in an existing one, then they’d send for their families to join them. Entire clans would make the journey to reunite with their loved ones who’d already prepared a place for them in the New World. And sometimes *gasp!* they might even take wives from the native tribes, with their children being considered citizens of the Crown from birth!

Oh, the horror.////////
