Ran across this old movie/play for various reasons today, and the actions of the horrible, abusive mother make a lot of sense - particularly in light of the actions and attitudes of Trump’s base:

The Effect of Gamma Rays 1972

It’s the oldie-but-goodie “The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds,” which is quite a mouthful. About a smalltown loser mother, who failed in life, and therefore hates anyone who looks happy or successful.

At the end of the movie, she kills her daughter’s beloved Peter Rabbit, the shy girl’s only friend, as a way to hurt her daughter for winning a science fair and trying to make something of her life.

This resonated with me. So many of the Trump supporters are the never-was’es - the mean kids from high school, all grown up now, living shitty lives and hating anyone who they perceive to not be as miserable as they are - and determined to MAKE them miserable.
