Well, people like Matt Drudge and Breitbart figured out that all they had to do was float a story long enough on social media and it would develop a life of its own, bet picked up by the mainstream media and discussed as it it had any inherent merit.

How is this anything new? People have been gullible since the beginning of civilization and have been misled by those with access to a printing press or radio station. William Randolph Hearst was responsible for starting the Spanish American War in 1898. The racism that continues to infect our society predates the Internet. The WSJ persecuted the Clintons with one false narrative after another — they did not need the Internet to spread their lies. Drudge and Breitbart are just another pair of liars continuing in this tradition.
