Evangelical support for Trump in the GOP caught me by surprise. Now that I’ve seen it in action, I think the answer is really very simple.

For most of the US religious right, their religion serves mainly as a socially approved way to do their hating.

Trump offers the same kind of satisfaction, without pesky underlying messages like “love thy enemy” getting in the way.
