Jackson’s sister, Laura Jackson Arnold, was a staunch Unionist. They had been close when they were young but when he died, she is reported to have said she “”would rather know that he was dead than to have him a leader in the rebel army.”

That’s why I can’t accept the “fighting for state” excuse. Plenty of Virginia unionists and in fact every state sent volunteers to defend it after Sumter.
