We had glowing pieces about Hitler in the New York Times and American Nazi Party rallies. We had a secret coup against FDR by sympathizers that was barely foiled. The official gov’t position might have been obliquely supportive of the Allies, but we had non-insignificant pockets of Nazi support until we officially went to war and Nationalist sentiment superseded things.

It’s similar to the same lack of reckoning we had with the Civil War and confederate fetishism. It just happened to take longer since it wasn’t a homegrown thing from the start.

Wasn’t the planned coup basically by plutocrats who were afraid that Roosevelt was going to institute socialism; was it actually tied to Nazis?
