I agree with ckkatz’s list with one exception: Unless you have a deep interest in naval aviation, scratch Virginia Beach off the list. I recall its beach as being one of the ugliest in the continental US, and if you do decide to stop there, don’t book a room near the top of the hotel, as the naval jets will sound like tornadoes going overhead.

Once you’re in NC, if you like barbecue, I’d detour a little from the coast to the Rocky Mount area, a mecca for eastern-NC style BBQ. I wish I could send you to the great Melton’s, but it was wiped out years ago in Hurricane Floyd. Even so, you can’t go very wrong here. When you smell the hickory smoke and you’re hungry, pull in. Keep in mind this is eastern NC. Don’t look for gooey red sweet/sour sauce. Eastern BBQ is mainly about vinegar and peppers.
