Was outside one afternoon and heard a noisy aircraft overhead. Looked up to see a B-17.

Realized that I was seeing something I was likely never to see again. Quite the poignant moment.

I’ve been blessed that way a couple of times.

One time I was living in St. Cloud MN and there was the unmistakable sound of round engines overhead. I ran out and a B-17 and B-24 heading to Oshkosh were circling town to land for fuel.

A few years later, one weekend a B-17 and a DC-3 were at the airport in Madison WI for an airshow. We didn’t have the money for rides but we went and watched them come and go a number of times then went to the hanger dance that Saturday night. They were supposed to fly out that Tuesday but were grounded - Tuesday, Sept 11, 2001…
