At its best, US Cavalry was used dismounted by people like General Buford holding back the confederate advance on day one at Gettysburg till the main force could arrive. You had occasional loons like Custer who tried to be romantic, but you’ll note what that got him at the Battle of Greasy Grass…

No offense to the Europeans, but I feel that the American cavalry commanders in the Civil War and immediately following had the right idea. Give them carbines for a little bit of firepower, and use their mobility to scout and report. Cavalry attacks in the age of cannons are outdated. Napoleon, Wellington, and Raglan were playing with fire.
