If some guy who was unknown to me was following me in a car, then got out and started following me on foot, there is nothing kooky about feeling the need to defend myself. The guy is clearly up to no good and is highly likely intent on doing me harm.

There’s a lot of innocent explanations for that, though, including that he’s not really following you, it’s actually coincidence, that it’s mistaken identity, or that you dropped something that he’s trying to return to you. The law isn’t going to legitimize you hauling off and attacking him just for following you.
