Well, little chance of me ever going to China, anyway. But for the poor schlubs eating from those “food” carts, at least the authorities are doing a little bit of work trying to stop it.

“Chinese authorities busted a black-market gutter-oil operation back in April, seizing 3,200 tons of gutter oil which had been rendered from rotten animal carcasses. By the time of the sting, the operation had already sold an estimated $1.6 million in carcass-juice. To food vendors. For cooking food in it.”

When I lived in San Diego back in the early 1960s, they always told us not to eat from the street vendors in Tijuana if we went there—the tacos were made from dog meat.

When we got to Seoul in the early 80s, the Preventive Medicine folks gave us tons of policy on surviving the local biome. We tried once to do what they recommended to strawberries—they turned to chlorinated strawberry jam. After months in-country we found out that our ravenous 12 and 14 yr olds were browsing every street fry-stand between the on-post school and our apartment.
