My mom had a different take on the question.

All through high school, I lost track of how many times she’d wistfully look up to the sky and say “I can’t wait to be an empty-nester. That will be so wonderful.”

She told my sister and I that if after graduating college we couldn’t find jobs that paid enough to live on…. “I’ll supplement your income. Really. Matching funds. I’ll give you a down payment and co-sign your mortgage. Whatever it takes to keep you from moving back here.”
